SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., May 29, 2013 – SURFER Magazine's 2013 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge hits Newport Beach this Friday, May 31st at the 54th and 56th Street breaks. The regional qualifying series has nearly completed its 2013 mission with six events down and only one to go before the seven regional champs take off on an all-expense paid trip-of-a-lifetime to the National Championship in Bali, Indonesia (June 17-22) in conjunction with the inaugural Oakley Pro Bali.
The storied and unique event series pits four-man teams (two surf shop pros and two shop employees) against each other for a chance to win $10,000, an advertising spread in SURFER Magazine, and the title of best surf shop in the country. This year marks the second consecutive year for each regional qualifying team to also earn an enviable trip to Bali, Indonesia, a major coup in itself, despite the National Championship outcome.
Each year, the West Regional Qualifier is one of the most hotly contested events. Last year saw Jack's Surfboards claim the victory and go on to win the first ever Bali Championship. However, the event has historically been anyone's game with Katin Surf Shop, Spyder Surf and Huntington Surf & Sport all making it to the Final last year and all having Regional Championships under their belts.
