SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 2, 2013 SURFER Magazine’s 2013 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge hits the East Coast next week with stops in Ponce Inlet, FL, April 9-10, Outer Banks, NC, April 12-13 and Manasquan Inlet, NJ, April 15-16. The seven-event regional qualifying series gives surf shops from around the United States the opportunity to compete for an all-expense paid trip-of-a-lifetime to a National Championship in Bali, Indonesia (June 17-22) in conjunction with the inaugural Oakley Pro Bali.

The storied and unique event series pits four-man teams (two surf shop pros and two shop employees) against each other for a chance to win $10,000, an advertising spread in SURFER Magazine, and the title of best surf shop in the country. This year marks the second consecutive year for each regional qualifying team to also earn an enviable trip to Bali, Indonesia, a major coup in itself, despite the National Championship outcome.

Sunrise Surf Shop has been the dominant force in the Southeast with an untarnished record of regional victories and one National Championship (2006) under its belt. But who will take the title in 2013 when the event lands at Ponce Inlet, FL, April 9-10, is still anyone’s game.

Invited Southeast teams:

Aqua East Surf Shop
Inland Ocean
Inlet Charleys Surf Shop
IWS Deerfield
IWS Lake Worth
Maui Nix
Ocean Magic
Quiet Flight
Red Dog Surf Shop
Salty Dog Surf Shop

2012 was a big year for Wave Riding Vehicles, who stole the Mid-Atlantic regional from two-time past National Champs Sweetwater. No doubt Sweetwater will be back with a vengeance come April 12-13 at the Outer Banks, NC, looking for redemption, the trip to Bali and another chance at a National Championship title.

Invited Mid-Atlantic teams:

7th Street Surf Shop

The Northeast region has been dominated by Heritage Surf & Sport for the past four years, but the pool of shop teams has deepened for 2013 and will surely result in increased competition. A new event location at Manasquan Inlet, NJ, April 15-16 may also shake up the situation.
