San Clemente, CA (August 15, 2011)SURFER Magazine's 2011 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge (OSSC) makes its sixth stop out of seven when it drives onto the white sands of New Smyrna Beach, FL on August 17th. The three-time defending champions, Sunrise Surf Shop, from Jacksonville, FL, are eagerly awaiting the chance to once again claim the Southeast title and take the coveted trip to Huntington Beach, CA to compete in the National Championship in September.

Sunrise Surf Shop

The 2010 Regional competition saw Bryan Hewitson and team Quiet Flight battle the crew from Sunrise into the waning minutes of the final, but a non-responsive ocean and a 5-point penalty for not getting back to the dugout in time landed Quiet Flight back into second place as Team Sunrise snagged yet another win.

Sunrise will be back with the usual suspects donning jerseys in the forms of Dane Jefferys, Garrett Carmichael, Asher Nolan and Ryan Briggs. But don't count out Quiet Flight who's looking to avenge their bridesmaid status from last year.

Local boys Red Dog Surf Shop have yet to put their stamp on a regional victory but are bringing the fire this year as Noah Schweizer, Reese Lewis, Larry McGone and Matt Bender step into the ring. Other standouts include Island Water Sports, composed of Scott Pesner, Tanner Strohmenger, Cheyne Cottrell, and Brian Noell along with Salty Dog who's bringing Caleb and Jeremy Johnston, Bryan Forland, and Pierce Miller to the table.

Hailing from Neptune Beach and consisting of Shane Murray, Jody Davis, Keto Burns, and Brent Lamprecht, the team from Aqua East is always a force to be reckoned with and will definitely be one to keep an eye on as there's a good chance they could find themselves in the final.

The Southeast Region is always a hotly contested event with a highly coveted trophy. The surfers and surf shops, like most sports fans in Florida, are about as passionate as they come.

About Surf Shop Challenge:

Originally conceived to provide a fun and competitive format for the hardcore surf shop riders, the SURFER Shop Team Challenge was one of the most popular and exciting Southern California contests of the early 1980s.  Through the years the contest has evolved, with five qualifying regional events around the country, culminating in a national championship at the famed Huntington Beach Pier in sunny Southern California. The underlying principles, however, have remained the same. The Oakley Surf Shop Challenge is still about giving back to the shops, the true backbone of the industry and the heart of the sport of surfing. Each year the competition level rises, the stakes become greater and the prizes become bigger.
