The seven best surf shops in the US embarked on a journey of a lifetime to compete in the National Championship at Keramas and the chance to win $10,000 and bragging rights. Surf Ride, Sunrise Surf Shop, Sweetwater Surf Shop, 7th Street Surf Shop, Hawaiian Island Creations, Channel Islands Surfboards and Revolution battled it out
Located in Camarillo, California, Revolution Surf Shop is wielding a team of heavy hitters, including one-time World Tour surfer Nathaniel Curran, as they head to Bali for the OSSC championships. Hailing from Central California, Revolution has been outfitting Ventura-based surfers since 1996. “The idea of Oakley paying for us to all go to Bali is insane,” said Revolution surfer Nathanial Curran. “I’m just stoked for the kids who have never been there. It’s such a huge opportunity.”
Growing up around some of the world’s most respected waves, the Hawaiians from HIC have to be viewed as a powerhouse heading into the barreling rights at Keramas. Dating back to 1971, HIC has been a pivotal surf shop in the islands for more than four decades. Touting two big hitters in the forms of team riders Kekoa Cazimero and Joel Centio, along with two very sharp shop employees, the Hawaiians are looking very strong to be standing on the podium at event’s end.
Founded in 1969 by renowned shaping legend Al Merrick, Santa Barbara’s Channel Islands has grown into one of the most respected labels in the surf industry. With their core shop located in very building that started it all, the Channel Islands team took out the Northwest Regional win at Santa Cruz and will be heading to Bali for the international championships. With their talent honed at Rincon and riding some of the most finely tuned quivers in the event, the CI team should prove to be a formidable opponent when they take to the rights at Keramas.
New Jersey’s Seventh Street Surf Shop boasts four locations in the state. With their primary shop located on the iconic New Jersey boardwalk, they’ve become a destination for surfers on the East Coast. “I think the Shop Challenge is an awesome event,” said Brian Lies. “It’s such a fun format and we’re really looking forward to the waves in Bali.”
Located in Wrightsville Beach, NC the Sweetwater team has been a powerhouse at the OSSC, winning two national titles. Stacked with talent, Sweetwater is going to be a tough draw for the other shop teams to say the least. “We’re really proud of the team and what they’ve accomplished,” said the shop’s owner, Chuck Bourgeios. “I think we’ve got a really strong team this year. Our goal is to not only be the finest team in North Carolina, but we want to be recognized globally.”
After months of competition, seven regional champions from across the country are heading to Bali to compete for the national crown.
Family owned and operated since 1976, Sunrise Surf Shop has been a staple in the surf scene in Florida for more than three decades. Not new to the Surf Shop Challenge, Sunrise has won big in the past, claiming the $10,000 check in 09. “For a guy that works 40 hours on the floor like me, this gives me so much to look forward to,” said shop employee Dane Jefferys. “I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be.”
No stranger to the Surf Shop Challenge, Team Surf Ride holds both regional and national title wins. With two locations and an online store, a commitment to surfboards are what makes at Surf Ride shop so special. Packed with talent, the Surf Ride team will definitely be one to beat when they compete at the national championships in Bali.
